Nurse Jack, originally from Lancashire, North England, tells us about his experience as an agency nurse with Alliance Nursing. Jack was inspired to finally make the move to Australia after he attended our Say G’Day Glasgow event.

Nursing was not my initial career choice. I originally pursued a degree in physiotherapy but realised it was not the right fit for me. I returned home and took a role as hospital patient transport in Blackburn Hospital, which later transitioned into a healthcare assistant position in intensive care during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this time, I had the opportunity to work alongside truly inspiring nurses. I really enjoyed my time, and I soon decided to pursue a career in nursing myself. I completed my studies to become a Registered Nurse, and the journey has been so rewarding ever since.

Life in Adelaide

Moving to Australia had been on my mind for some time, but I was uncertain about continuing my career in nursing. My experience in intensive care in the UK had been challenging, and I assumed that moving would be an overwhelming process.

That all changed when I attended Alliance Nursing’s event in Glasgow. The event was well-organised, with a wide range of information available and staff to answer every question I had. Any doubts I had about moving disappeared, as the team were so eager to support me through each step of the process.

I ultimately chose Adelaide as my destination, settling in North Adelaide, where I already had family connections. I’m loving living near the beach and the work life balance here!

Working with Alliance Nursing

I’ve loved my experience with Alliance! In the UK, agency nurses can sometimes be treated differently - however, in Australia, I have found that agency nurses are valued equally alongside permanent staff. The work environment is welcoming, and I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, which has been great for developing my skills.

I was able to work in an oncology unit, which I hadn’t worked in before. Initially, I was unsure what to expect, but it quickly became one of my favourite placements. I have since taken on a three-month contract with them while continuing my agency work. The variety and flexibility offered by Alliance Nursing has allowed me to continuously develop my skills as a nurse while having flexibility over my schedule.

Life in Australia: A Better Work-Life Balance

One of the most striking differences between nursing in Australia and the UK is the emphasis on work-life balance. In the UK, 12-hour shifts are standard, and alternative options can be difficult to find. Here, there is a greater focus on ensuring that staff have adequate downtime. The patient-to-staff ratio is also much better, which allows for a higher quality of care and a more manageable workload.

Outside of work, I have fully embraced the active lifestyle that Australia has to offer. I have taken up running along the beach, joined a run club, and started playing rugby with a local team.

Looking Ahead

I’m excited to explore more of Australia soon! I have friends in Sydney and Brisbane, and I plan to visit them while also picking up shifts in different locations. I am keen to try rural and remote nursing at some point and explore some of the outback

If you are even remotely considering working as a nurse in Australia, I say go for it! The opportunities here are vast, the lifestyle is fantastic, and the support provided by Alliance Nursing, makes the transition far easier than you might expect.

If you’re even considering it – do it. You won’t regret it.
