This international women's day, we asked one of our nurses, Shella, what this day means to her and who influenced her in becoming who she is today - her mother.
The woman who has shaped me into the person I am today is my mum. From the moment I was born, she has been my guiding light, teaching me the true values of hard work, sacrifice, and kindness. While words may never fully capture her impact on me, I hope to offer just a glimpse of why she inspires me so deeply.
As a child, I watched my mum work tirelessly, always ensuring we had everything we needed. She would stay up late, going above and beyond to finish her work, help my dad, and still make sure my siblings and I were well cared for. Growing up back home was incredibly challenging, and my mum and dad worked tirelessly to provide for us and meet our needs.
Her mother's strength
On school mornings, breakfast was always ready—we just had to eat and get dressed for the day. Our packed lunches were already prepared, and if not, she would bring them to school later, just before lunch. I never once saw her complain or give up; she simply did what needed to be done, expecting nothing in return. It wasn’t the grand gestures that impressed me, but the countless small sacrifices she made every single day. She didn’t just work to provide for us; she worked to build a life filled with love and stability.
Lessons that last a lifetime
What truly sets her apart is her extraordinary heart. My mum is the kindest person I know, always seeing the best in others and treating everyone with warmth and compassion. I’ve witnessed her selflessly help anyone in need, always putting others before herself—whether family, friends, or strangers. Her kindness is genuine and boundless, and her love and generosity have always been a constant presence in my life.
When I was younger, I didn’t fully understand the depth of my mum’s sacrifices. It wasn’t until I got older that I realised just how much she had given me—opportunities, love, and unwavering support. She worked so hard to ensure we had the best life possible, and for that, I am forever grateful.
Looking back, I know I wouldn’t be who I am today without her. Her hard work, kindness, and selflessness have shaped me into the person I am. Every day, I carry her lessons with me—her determination, her love for others, and her belief that with love, patience, and hard work, we can overcome any challenge. If I achieve anything in life, it will be because of her. She is my greatest inspiration, and everything I do is a tribute to the sacrifices she made for me.
My mum didn’t just raise me—she moulded me. Through her sacrifices, her endless love, and the lessons she taught me, she gave me the strength and values I carry with me today.
I will always be thankful for everything she’s done.
I love my mum!
